Frequently
Asked
Questions:

How short is short-term therapy?
Typically 12 to 16 weekly sessions. But people’s needs vary. Sometimes one or two sessions are all that are required. Sometimes more than 16; the client is the one who ultimately decides. Most people come once a week, but some come more often. Some come once a fortnight. The process is flexible, with the final decision always made by the client.

Where are you?
Central and West London. Clients come from all over London and southeast England

  How do I pay?
By cheque or cash, after each session, or after each block of four sessions.

How long is an hour?
Between 50 and 60 minutes

Do I have to pay for missed sessions?
Yes.
Unless you give 48 hours notice.

Can I use my BUPA health insurance to pay?
Almost certainly,
depending on your type of cover. I am a BUPA recognised provider.

How private are you?
Totally, as with your doctor. There is a waiting room at the Harley Street consulting rooms but not at Shepherds Bush, so please don’t arrive there too early. Clients are buzzed in by entry- phone.

How confidential are you?
Again, as with your doctor. I subscribe to the code of ethics of the British Association for Psychotherapy & Counselling (BACP) who will independently examine any client complaints.
(back to top)   What sort of therapy do you do?
It’s called psychodynamic, which means that in the tradition of Freud and Jung it takes account of unconscious influences and past events in addressing here-and-now problems. It’s also short-term, which means that it focuses on core issues and it does seek solutions.

What sort of issues do you deal with?
Most personal problems can be usefully looked at from the point of view of therapy or counselling (see list on previous page). If you turn out to have a medical or psychiatric problem I can make a referral to ensure you are offered appropriate help.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy? Not a lot, though some practitioners would disagree. I am also qualified to offer executive coaching and mentoring, for people with career issues.
What sort of people come for mentoring or coaching?
All sorts, up to and including board-level executives; but newcomers starting out as well. I have worked with people from management consulting, film and television and investment banking, among other industries. I often work with overseas executives, particularly Americans and Australians.
What is executive mentoring?
Like coaching, it looks at career and work/life issues from a psychological as well as a practical point-of-view. I focus particularly on the area where personal concerns and career dilemmas overlap.
What sort of people come to see you?
A complete cross-section of the public: men and women, particularly in their 20s, 30s and 40s but older than that too. Couples and individuals, gay people as well as straight, ethnic and religious minorities too
Do you ever offer reduced rates? Yes, but there’s a waiting list. Rather than keep people waiting I usually refer them to colleagues. A course of brief therapy typically costs as much as a holiday but tends to have a longer-lasting effect.
